Our season opens in the Highlander Theater with UCM Theatre and Dance joining forces
with UCM Music to present the classic musical Gypsy from October 3 -7. Gypsy comes alive
exploring the dreams and efforts of one hungry powerhouse, Mama Rose, to get her daughters
into show business. Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a burlesque dancer, it is
considered one of the greatest American musicals of all time. Dr. Julie Mollenkamp will direct;
musical direction by Dr. Kristee Haney and Mr, Conner Tipping; and choreography by Ashley
November 13-17 we will present the fast-paced, fall-out-of-your-chair-laughing,
hilariously ridiculous comedy Unnecessary Farce by Paul Slade Smith. In a cheap motel room,
an embezzling mayor is supposed to meet with his female accountant, while in the room next
room, two undercover cops wait to catch the meeting on video. But, there is some confusion as to
who is in which room, who’s being videotaped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired a hit man,
and, for some reason, the accountant keeps taking of her clothes! Two Cops. Three crooks. Eight
doors – GO! Directed by John Wilson.
From February 20-24, we will produce the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner August:
Osage County. This award-winning play was also made into a hit movie starring Meryl Streep
and Julia Roberts. When the Weston family unexpectedly reunites after their Dad disappears,
their Osage County, Oklahoma homestead explodes in a deluge of hidden truths and disturbing
secrets. Featuring Theatre Professor, Dr. Julie Rae Mollenkamp as Violet Weston, the scathing,
acidic, unpredictable matriarch of the Weston family, this production is not to be missed. It will
be directed by Dr. Aaron M. Scully. Note: This production does contain mature themes and
Our next spring show, from April 3-7, is the musical Godspell. This is the first major
musical from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Shwartz (Wicked,
Pippin, Children of Eden), and it took the world by storm. The story centers around a small
group of people who help Jesus with the telling of different parables by using a wide variety of
games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs,
ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the
stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness,
tolerance and love come vibrantly to life. Our new faculty member, Mary Trotter, will direct
with musical direction by Ahafia Jurkiewicz-Miles and choreography by Ashley Miller-Scully.
Once again, dance professor, Ashley Miller-Scully surprises us with a dance concert to
end the spring that is sure to carry you through the summer with a smile on your face! Our UCM
dancers will team up Miller-Scully to choreograph to the music of popular Kansas City rock
band My Oh My! Then, on April 19 and April 20th My Oh MY! will join the dancers outdoors, at
Powell Gardens (twenty miles west of Warrensburg) to play live while the dancers dance and
you sit, unwind, and snack on sweet treats on the grounds of one of western Missouri’s most
beautiful botanical gardens. This show is like nothing we have ever done at UCM and will be
the perfect way to end the Passion and Power season!
